Tax-Free Savings Account

Recently, the Government of Canada approved legislation to introduce the Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). This is a registered savings plan that allows member-owners like you to save without paying tax on the interest you earn. Whether you are saving to purchase a car, planning to renovate your home, looking forward to a family vacation, or just putting some money away for a rainy day, a Battle River Credit Union TFSA will help you get there faster.

Things you should know about this new savings plan:

Available to Canadian residents age 18 and older who carry a valid social insurance number.
This savings plan is not available for Trusts or Corporations.
Contributions are not tax deductible.
Contributions may only be made by the owner.
All investment income earned, including interest, dividends and capital gains will not be taxed. That means you get to keep 100% of the interest you earn.
You can withdraw funds at any time* and for any reason, Tax-Free. Withdrawals are not subject to withholding tax or reported as taxable income.
Maximum yearly contribution limit will be $5,000 with the potential for an inflation adjustment increasing this limit in future years.
Unused contribution room may be carried forward indefinitely and contributed in a future year.
Withdrawals (capital and income) will increase the unused contribution room, but you do need to wait until the next year to re-contribute the money.
Unused contribution room will be reported on the annual CRA Notice of your Assessment.
Qualified investments include: term deposits, variable interest savings accounts, index linked term deposits, mutual funds, publicly traded securities and bonds.

Tax-Free Savings Account will be available beginning January 2, 2009.
