On January 1, 2004 new privacy laws governing credit unions and other businesses come into force. Battle River Credit Union has a long history of respecting the privacy of their members and we are committed to maintaining the security, confidentiality and accuracy of our members' personal information we collect.

Our commitment means we will protect your privacy and respect your right to have a say in how we collect, use and disclose your personal information.

While Battle River Credit Union has always respected the confidentiality of member information, we have now formally adopted a Privacy policy based on the following ten principles:

1. Accountability We have designated a Privacy Officer who is accountable for our compliance with the principles of the Code.
2. Identifying Purposes When we ask you for personal information, we will identify the purposes for which it will be used or disclosed.
3. Consent We require your knowledge and express or implied consent for the collection, use or disclosure of personal information. (Except in specific limited circumstances. You may withdraw your consent at any time, subject to legal or contractual obligations and with reasonable notice).
4. Limiting Collection The collection of personal information is limited to the purposes we have identified for you.
5. Limiting Use, Disclosure, and Retention We will use or disclose your personal information only with your express or implied consent, or as required by law. We will retain your information for as long as necessary to fulfill identified purposes.
6. Accuracy We will keep your information accurate, complete and up-to-date as is necessary for the purposes for which it is to be used.
7. Safeguards We will protect your personal information with appropriate security safeguards.
8. Openness We will make available to you information about our privacy policy and procedures.
9. Individual Access Upon written request, we will give you access to your personal information, and to whom it has been disclosed.
10. Challenging Compliance You are entitled to question the Privacy Officer about our compliance with any of these principles.

Why we collect personal information:

• To research and develop the products and services that will help meet your financial needs
• To make informed lending decisions
• To comply with legal and regulatory requirements
• To protect you from illegal activity "Know your member"
  

Your consent:

Before we collect, use or disclose your personal information we will obtain your consent to the purposes that we ordinarily use this information for in order to provide you service. We will obtain your consent in writing when you become a credit union member, or if we need information for a new purpose.

From time to time we may also rely on your implied consent to collect, use or disclose personal information, but we will only do this in cases where it is reasonable to assume your consent in connection with a service you are using.

Safeguarding your information:

Battle River Credit Union does not disclose personal information to any unrelated third parties. We may disclose personal information without consent when required by law, but will limit the information we provide to only what is legally required.

Battle River Credit Union and it's related service suppliers have together agreed to meet the highest of standards of privacy protection.
